Concealed Carry Owner Robbed of Gun at Walmart.
In Medford, Oregon, a Walmart customer was robbed of his concealed carry firearm. Police stated that the victim was not fully concealing his Springfield XD 40 caliber handgun. They spotted him walking into the store from the parking lot partially exposing his gun inadvertently. After entering the store, the customer said he went straight to the bathroom. He wasn’t aware of being followed.
Walking into the bathroom, the victim was punched in the face by the first suspect who then took his gun, pointing it at the victim, demanding him to leave. The suspect’s accomplice, who was waited outside of the bathroom, kept his cover while the other stole the gun. One suspect has been arrested but the other is still unknown and at large. The victim’s gun remains missing.
It is hard to grasp that a man who has taken measures to protect himself, who clearly understands the dangers, would be a target. The key word in this story is “partially concealed”. If the victim had taken the necessary steps in concealing his firearm, this incident may have never occurred.
Here are some tips on how to keep covered as a concealed carry permit holder.
If you are planning on going out with your firearm, we recommend wearing appropriate clothing to keep it covered. Wear a longer shirt that covers well below your holster. That will give extra coverage in cases where you may be reaching for something.
While it is normal to bend down occasionally, make sure to bend at the knees to avoid exposing your firearm.
Change how you move while wearing your firearm.
Look into wearing a holster that you noticeably feel. This is a constant reminder you are concealed carrying.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you feel like you are being watched or followed, use clear judgement and gauge the situation. Stay in well lit, well populated areas.
If you are a woman concealed carrying and using your purse, consider owning one with a separate compartment. Make sure it is easy to access, and not visible while pulling personal items out i.e. wallet, cellphone etc.
The basic principal of carrying is to feel protected and to deter criminals from advancing on you if the time ever comes to reveal your firearm. It is hard to imagine being a target when you are protected by your gun, but there are people out there who prey on these opportunities, so take extra precaution. Consider these steps next time you decide to conceal carry so you don’t become a target like this victim was.
