How Do I Obtain A Concealed Weapon Permit in Wyoming?

November 25, 2013 by Online Carry Training

The laws in the state of Wyoming have followed the trends of Arizona, Vermont and Alaska and now allow both open and concealed carry within the state without a permit.  There is still the option to obtain a concealed carry permit from the state of Wyoming.  A concealed carry permit for the State of Wyoming will allow you to carry concealed in those states that have reciprocity with the state.  Currently 29 states have reciprocity with Wyoming.  Having a concealed carry permit can add to your peace of mind when traveling outside of the state and will allow you to protect yourself and your family.

The State of Wyoming is a “shall issue” state which means that if you meet all the requirements for the permit then the local sheriff’s office is required to issue a permit upon request.

The qualifications for a concealed weapons permit in Wyoming are the following:

  • Is a resident of the United States and has been a resident of Wyoming 6 months or more
  • Is at least 21 years of age
  • Does not suffer from a physical infirmity that prevents safely handling a firearm
  • Is not ineligible to possess a firearm (Examples that make you ineligible include felony convictions, habitual illegal drug use, alcohol abuse)
  • Must demonstrate familiarity and safety with a firearm and have a certificate of completion from an accredited training course
  • Has not been adjudicated legally incompetent

If you meet the above requirements then you can submit an application to your local Sheriff’s office.  When you complete the application and submit the permit fee the sheriff’s office will get a full set of fingerprints.  A full background check will be conducted to ensure that all requirements are met.

It will take up to sixty days for the permit to be processed.  If for some reason the application was denied you will receive in writing the reason for denial and will have an additional 30 days to refute the denial and the application will be reconsidered within 20 days.

Once you receive a permit it is valid for five years.  Renewals can be completed at the Sheriff’s office as well.  The requirements for renewal are to complete the form at the Sheriff’s office where you reside, pay the renewal fee and submit a notarized affidavit that you remain qualified to handle a firearm.  The office will re-verify your criminal history and issue the renewal permit.
