The National Rifle has recently introduced its Carry Guard’s insurance program for concealed carry weapons owners. To date it is the best available insurance program.
Why Buy a CCW insurance policy?
As a responsible gun owner you are both informed about concealed carry gun laws and conscientious about upholding them. With the rights and responsibilities of owning a weapon come the potential for lawsuits and criminal charges. The costs of having a concealed carry handgun and using it to defend yourself, your family, and your property could realistically bankrupt you.
CCW insurance is a hedge against this potential scenario. The reality is: there is an increasing necessity for concealed carry gun owners to protect themselves from the consequences of accidentally or purposely discharging a firearm in self-defense or defense of others.
What the Policy Includes
The Carry Guard insurance policy provides protection for both civil and criminal charges. The plan covers up to $1,500.00 in civil suits and up to $250,000 for criminal defense—depending on the package you choose. NRA members receive a 20% discount in premiums.
NRA members who opt to seek coverage with another insurer who may be willing to offer full criminal defense costs before trial. The fact is: Most criminal defense attorneys do not ask for payment up front. They’d request a retainer.
The Carry Guard insurance company has stated that their competitors would do so most likely because it was a frivolous case. A policy like this would be void if a conviction ensued.
Concealed Carry Insurance Options
Gun owner insurance has several options in policies. These are called:
- concealed carry insurance,
- personal firearm protection insurance,
- self-defense insurance,
- stand your ground insurance coverage.
It’s important to know what coverage you might need and to find the product that gives you this coverage. Many large insurance companies have steered clear of CCW insurance. They feel that establishing association with the potentially controversial topic of gun violence is not wise.
Gun owners looking for concealed carry insurance have some options. Products offered by the few insurance companies have wide variations in coverage, amounts of that coverage, and premium costs. Careful reading of your policy is crucial. Some companies do not offer coverage for those charged with a crime. Others provide coverage for court costs. Many do not cover the cost of your attorney’s retainer.
Gun owner insurance offered through gun owners’ associations like the NRA is not unusual. It is also offered through some small, regional insurers.
Most gun owners want policies that protect in self-defense and accidental weapons discharge incidents. Most of the policies are concealed carry insurance or self-defense insurance. Here are some coverage examples:
- Legal defense services plans is a means of accessing a network of attorneys specializing in firearms self-defense cases. This yearly fee defense service will help you hire an attorney for a civil and criminal defense.
- Concealed carry insurance: This insurance covers civil defense, criminal defense, defense attorney retainers, bodily injury and property damage expenses. Some plans even cover lost wages for court time. Most policies provide coverage only for acts of self-defense.
- Gun association policies: National Rifle Association is an example of this type of insurance. Gun association policies may cover your civil defense and damages, criminal defense, lost wages, and possibly bail costs.
While it is highly unlikely you will be involved in events like this it’s still wise to have it. Costs are relatively low. For example: $150 to $600 per year. The cost depends on the plan you select.
