Quick Tip: Concealed Carry On A Motorcycle

February 3, 2016 by Online Carry Training

We all have our own preferences and biases in everything in life, so concealed carry is no exception. There is no universal standard for carrying a gun while driving a motorcycle. Your comfort while driving a motorcycle with your gun depends much on your position and location on your bike or trike.

There are almost infinite variations of seating positions on a motorcyle, but they all fall in thre basic confirgurations:

  • Forward Leaning

  • Upright

  • Backward Leaning

Where you will fit your concealed carry gun depends much on your riding style. In general, it is advisable to ride with an IWB (Inside the Waistband) holster that allows high retention. Remember, whenever you decide to use a holster, make sure that it is secured properly so it always stays where you want it all the time while riding.

Forward Leaning. It can be trickly to keep it on an Inside the Waistband (IWB) concealed carry holster when you ride a motorcycle leaning forward. For this riding configuration, it’s better to use a pocket holster. Fit your gun inside the chest of your jacket. This way you can be assured that your pistol stays where you fit it.

One alternative though is to fit it behind your back at 5 to 6 o’clock position. But it is not the most secure spot for high speed and sharp turns. If you drive a lot like this you’re better off using a pocket holster and place your gun securely iniside the chest of your jacket.

Upright. There are more options where to fit your concealed carry when you are riding with an upright configuration. The most preferred however, when using an IWB, is within 4 to 5 o’clock just around the kidney area. Or you can choose the strong-side carry at 3 o’clock. The position of your legs makes appendix carry an unpopular choice.

Back Leaning. Depending on your motorcyle, some designs allow the rider to fully recline. This is where appendix carry is advisable depending on the size of your gun. If it’s still not comfortable enough for you, again, strong carry 3 o’clock is always a good choice. You can still go inside jacket’s chest carry with a pocket holster.

Whatever carry style you choose, be sure to secure your gun so it stays even through some jerky, fast and bumpy rides.

Additional Consideration

It’s your ride and it’s your style, so it’s your rules that apply. However, make sure to keep your firearm either in a pocket holster inside a zipped coat pocket or use a leather IWB holster or a high-retention Kydex.

Additional Suggestions

  • Secure the trigger guard.

  • Wear your holster securely so it will not be flagging other riders.

  • Avoid ankle carry.

  • Keep your firearms safely with you’re not going to lock it in a cargo box.

  • Experiment on different position and configuration to find out what is best for you.
