The 3 Be’s of concealed carry

Glock.jpg As an Instructor, I teach people that the core of carrying a firearm can be broken down to three,
easy to remember Bes. These three Be’s are designed to be used while carrying a weapon and
do not refer to training, or what kind of gun to carry, or anything beyond carrying a gun. The
three Be’s are:
Be Calm and Humble
When it comes to carrying a firearm it’s important to remember you have a tool that can kill
someone. Carrying a gun is a serious matter and it should be treated as such. When you carry a
gun you are morally obliged to remain calm, to always practice de-escalation techniques. You
can never start a fight, never engage in a fist fight outside of self-defense, and you should never
meet anger with anger. Carrying a gun means you need to be humble and be willing to eat your
pride when it comes to random insults, cat calling, and incidents like road rage. Being calm is
incredibly important when carrying a firearm, knowing, understanding, and controlling your
temper is extremely important when carrying a gun. As a concealed carrier you have to be the
bigger, and better person.
Be Situationally Aware
Situational awareness is the best weapon you have in your arsenal. The ability to remain aware,
and to observe the world around you is an extremely important skill when it comes to carrying a
firearm. The last thing you should want to do is to actually have to use your weapon. Personally,
pulling my weapon is the absolute last thing I ever want to have to do. Situational awareness
allows me to perceive a threat before it develops into a dangerous situation. Being aware is both
a macro and micro process. It goes from carrying a gun because you are aware there are
threats out there, to planning your day to avoid stupid people, at stupid times, and stupid places,
to simply being aware of how a person is acting, or to seeing avoiding a massive, aggressive
dog.
Be Prepared to Fight, and to Kill
If you are going to carry a gun, and you are already using the first two Bs, the last one you
should have to use is the third B. Be ready to fight. As an instructor, I have had people come to
my class. with the idea, they can simply scare an attacker away with a gun. They aren’t ready to
fight, even if they are aware, and they are calm. More than likely showing a firearm will scare
the bad guy, but that’s not what you need to depend on. What if it doesn’t scare them and you
aren’t willing to pull the trigger? They can disarm you, and now they can kill you, and kill others.
If you are going to carry a gun, be willing to use it when you have to. You should never want to
use your gun, but if you are forced to, you must be willing to fight, and possibly to kill.
